Once believed to be debilitating, lifelong conditions, mental disorders
are now understood to be as treatable as most physical illnesses.
Today, given the right combination of treatment, support and a voice in
decisions concerning their care, people who formerly might have been
confined to life in an institution are able to live, work, learn and
participate fully in their communities. With the current mental health
system designed specifically to provide long-term, custodial care to
people with mental illnesses, the concept of recovery represents a
seismic shift in attitudes, beliefs and priorities.
This will be the first in a series of three webcasts being co-sponsored
by the NGA Center for Best Practices, the Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Service Administration's (SAMHSA), SAMHSA's Center for Mental
Health Services, JBS International, Inc., Advocates for Human Potential,
Inc., and the National Association of State Mental Health Program
Directors (NASMHPD). For more information about mental health systems,

Founded in 1908, the National Governors Association (NGA) is the
collective voice of the nation's governors and one of Washington, D.C.'s
most respected public policy organizations. Its members are the
governors of the 50 states, three territories and two commonwealths. NGA
provides governors and their senior staff members with services that
range from representing states on Capitol Hill and before the
Administration on key federal issues to developing and implementing
innovative solutions to public policy challenges through the NGA Center
for Best Practices. For more information, visit www.nga.org.
