1) True Collaboration: How Work Really Gets Done in Communities — The
Move From Silos to Systems
Wednesday, January 17, 2007; 12 Noon to 5:00 PM; (lunch provided)
The McConnell Center, Dover, New Hampshire

Access to Health Care – Poverty – Planning Issues – Workforce
Shortages – Clean Air

When communities uncover and explore their highest aspirations, and
support and sustain systematic, strategic efforts to reach them, they
create lasting change. Through research and hands-on experience, Jay
Connor and the Collaboratory for Community Support have identified
what local communities need to do to foster holistic, community-wide
solutions to pressing community conditions. Their work is founded on
the premise that communities today are challenged to create
systematic, locally-based solutions to complex problems by working
across organizations and sectors. This session will focus on the
Collaboratory’s research on the community change process and
strategies for developing the skill of “intentional” community
collaboration.
Topics Include:
• Historical organizational impediments that have resulted in
nonprofits not having strong community connections
• Examples of International Best Practices successfully getting to
community solutions
• Boards who govern “vertically” vs. “horizontally” and the need to
balance both
• Staying agile and connected and forming an open rapport with the
community
• Moving from “surface” collaboration to “intentional” collaboration
• Why nonprofits must exist to serve a community need and what that
means for the future
• How to engage to achieve effective collaboration results

PRESENTER:
Joseph A. “Jay” Connor, JD/MBA
Jay is the Founder/CEO of The Collaboratory for Community Support, an
Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan, and author of
Community Visions, Community Solutions (2003). From his work with
leaders of diverse constituencies, Jay and his team concluded that in
order to be effective, our community leaders must be comfortable at
the intersection not only of organizations and cultures but also at
the intersection of the nonprofit, business and governmental sectors.
Before founding The Collaboratory, Jay was President/CEO of Nonprofit
Enterprise at Work (NEW), in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has written for
the National Civic Review, Foundation News and Commentary, Board
